my grandmother taught me to crochet what was called the afghan stitch way back when and how to cross stitch designs on the finished panels. i designed patterns for her many times! my great aunt (her sister) was a knitter and taught me when i was 12 or so, but i didn’t really stick with it. i always admired her spinning wheel (was there just for decoration) but didn’t take that up till much later. i took up quilting as well. i got back into the knitting and crochet when i started spinning about 10-12 years ago (a friend corrupted me!) and needed something to do with the yarn!
i started spinning various fibers of unknown origin, mostly naturals wools, wool blends. the first fiber i fell in love with was mohair-i love it! i even got hand cards to blend colors with mohair locks…i am a mohair addict! it’s so soft and fun to spin and takes dyes so nicely. i also love camel and alpaca, and llama. i’ve spun merino, bamboo as well and many blends. soy sil and tussah/cashmere are my current challenges and they are rough! but i will learn their ways and spin each at least once. probably more because they feel so nice.

i crocheted a bunch of hats in 2011 for yule and xmas gifts. crochet is fast and easeir for me because i'd been doing it a hell of a lot longer. i also knitted a few scarves, one for my bf's daughter and one for a friend of ours. mostly, they were easy to deal with because they were done on larger needles. i'd made the fun eyelash ones and one on #10 needles that had yarn overs...woooo!
matty matt wanted a knit hat and we found a cool pattern he liked, a slouchy hat and some yarn, alpaca - wonderful but expensive for goodness sakes! the boy has good taste! it was brown alpaca with a purple for the stripes - matt calls his hat the purple hat of awesomeness (even though it's mostly brown). the purple ended up having some brown speckles in it and it matched wonderfully as i knit it up! the pattern was very easy for me to follow and great to knit at work because of that. i began the knitting very nervous, i mean it's knitting! i remember taking a picture and sending it to my bf saying "wow! it' looks like real knitting!" a confused bf replied "of course it does..."
i made a few mistakes and i finished it late, yes, as usual, but he loved it! i had a TON of the yarn left so i made miranda one, hers isn't quite as slouchy as his - yeah, i modified a pattern! go me! and i didn't make the same mistakes. there's enough yarn left over for more but since they wanted their hats to be special and unique (read didn't want their sister to have one), i couldn't make another hat so i am making miranda a scarf with it. the scarf will have some yarn overs worked in a pattern that will make wavey looking things...at least if i follow the pattern right it will!
so now i'm addicted. i have a TON of patterns i want to make. i either print them out and carry them in my knitting bag or i send myself the links. i want to make socks and it took me forever to find the pattern for a shawl i wanted to make with a yarn i'd been holding onto for a year or so! i found other knitting blogs from some knitty.com pattern makers and i'm just really having fun!
